Bill Viola: Night Journey / Pollença, Mallorca (Spain)

September 5, 2006

Bill Viola in Mallorca
Bill Viola presents for the first time in Europe his video “Night Journey” (2005) in the unique setting of the church of the convent of Santo Domingo, in Pollença (Mallorca, Spain). Evolving from an adaptation of the Opera “Tristan und Isolde”, in which the artist worked with director Esa Pekka Salonen, this video installation takes the exploration of spirituality that is a recurrent theme in Viola’s work to the sacred space of an old church. As one of the curators recalls in this interview, it was important for the artist to present this work in the particular setting of a church with a Mediterranean atmosphere. Curated by Karin Giaccobi and Biel Amer, the exhibition is open from July 20th to September 17th, 2006. By VTV correspondent Pau Waelder.
