Biennale de Montreal / part 1/3

The 5th edition of La Biennale de Montréal was held in Montreal, Quebec, Canada from May 10th to July 8th , 2007. Work by 60 artists from Quebec, Canada and many other countries including South Africa, Brazil, China, Denmark, USA, Peru, the United Kingdom and Uruguay were presented in six varied venues across the city–from the art gallery at l’Universté du Québec à Montréal, to the recently-vacated, Concordia University Fine Arts studio building in downtown Montreal. The event also included performance events in clubs and galleries. The Biennale was organized by Centre international d’art contemporain de Montréal (CIAC). For the first time a curator from outside Québec was brought in to select works and put the show together. Wayne Baerwaldt is a controversial independent curator and the director of the Illingworth Kerr Gallery, ACAD. The Globe and Mail’s Sarah Milroy said “There are flashes of brilliance in the Montreal Biennale, thanks to a wild and woolly curator who gave the event a good shaking up.” (Link).
