The exhibition Kavalierstart 1978 – 1982 at Museum Morsbroich / Leverkusen presents from April 20 until July 20, 2008 the artistic positions of the early 1980s – a time when artists developed a new form of “thought in pictures”. Exhibition visitors will have the opportunity to view many early works by artists who have become quite famous since. The curator, Stefanie Kreuzer, has chosen the artists based on their high degree of sensitivity and their perceptive detection of societal and cultural changes. The artists featured in this exhibition applied strategies that were quite different from the modern rationalistic and functionalistic tendencies in that they focused more strongly on fiction and narration, irony, appropriation and simulation. On display are around 140 works of international artists: John Baldessari, Peter Fischli & David Weiss, Katharina Fritsch, Isa Genzken, Robert Gober, Jack Goldstein, Dan Graham, Rodney Graham, Georg Herold, Candida Höfer, Jenny Holzer, Martin Kippenberger, John Knight, Louise Lawler, Allan McCollum, Reinhard Mucha, Raymond Pettibon, Stephen Prina & Christopher Williams, Richard Prince, Thomas Ruff, Thomas Schütte, Cindy Sherman, Thomas Struth, Rosemarie Trockel, Jeff Wall and James Welling. The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue: Kavalierstart 1978 – 1982 Aufbruch in die Kunst der 80er. With texts by Kassandra Nakas, Noemi Smolik, Stefanie Kreuzer and Markus Heinzelmann.
