Julia Lohmann: Resilience / Designers of the Future Award / Design Miami Basel 2008

June 17, 2008

London-based designer Julia Lohmann is one of the four designers / design collectives who have been awarded Design Miami/ Basel’s “Designers of the Future 2008″ prize. Julia Lohmann’s response to the concrete and wool brief set by Design Miami/ Basel is based on research into manmade structures that are exposed to the elements, re-conquered by nature and demolished by humans as well as the effects of natural disasters on the built environment. The “Resilience” series concrete and wool tables designed for the fair consist of concrete that is cast in two-dimensional forms onto a woven wool baking. Then, the concrete shapes are broken up, held together by wool. In this video Julia Lohmann not only talks about the “Resilience” series, but also about other objects she displayed at the fair, for example the cow bench “Anoushka”. Julia Lohmann was born in Hildesheim, Germany in 1977. Interview: Sabine Trieloff. Design Miami/ Basel 2008, June 2, 2008.
