Vraoum! Treasures of Comics and Contemporary Art / La Maison Rouge, Paris

June 3, 2009

Mickey Mouse, Superman, Little Nemo, Spiderman, Tintin, Blake et Mortimer, Astérix, Iznogoud, Blueberry, Batman, Le Chat… These characters and heroes bron from the pen of the great authors of comics have not only delighted millions of readers around the world, but have also influenced artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Takashi Murakami, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Gilles Barbier, and Wim Delvoye.

The exhibition Vraoum ! trésors de la bande dessinée et art contemporain at La Maison Rouge in Paris, France, brings together the original plates made by great comic artists such as Hergé, Edgar P. Jacobs, Robert Crumb, Carl Barks, Will Eisner, and Hugo Pratt and the works of contemporary art they have inspired.

In this video, David Rosenberg talks about the concept of the exhibition, the connection between comics and contemporary art, and depicts this link between the two art genres based on visual elements such as the speech bubbles (used for example by Rivane Neuenschwander or Sammy Engramer). The exhibition has been commissioned by David Rosenberg and Pierre Sterckx.
