Mike Nelson: A Psychic Vacuum / Old Essex Market, Lower East Side, NYC / Remix
August 7, 2009
This is a remix of a never published documentary of the installation A Psychic Vacuum that British artist Mike Nelson set up in the Old Essex Market New York City’s Lower East Side in September / October 2007. Mike Nelson transformed the disused interior of the Essex Street market in a labyrinth of reconstructed rooms and passageways. A Psychic Vacuum was produced by Creative Time.
“Accessed through a small door on Delancey Street, the work draws visitors into a parallel universe by way of a series of deeply believable and disquieting architectural spaces, confusing the real with the fictionally derelict. Entering Nelson’s work is an active, and sometimes anxious, experience in which viewers move through an elaborate labyrinth of rooms often concealed within rooms, surrendering their bearings to experience the artist’s three-dimensional narrative.” (Excerpt from the press release).
