Arto Lindsay: The Penny Parade / Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin

September 28, 2009

On September 26, 2009, one day before the national elections in Germany, the Brazilian-U.S. American musician and artist Arto Lindsay intervenes in the heart of the German capital, Berlin, as part of the events that celebrate the 20th birthday of the Haus der Kulturen der Welt. The parade to the Haus der Kulturen der Welt – titled Penny Parade – started at the meeting point Humboldt-Statue, Unter den Linden 6.

As in this spring’s Venice Biennale, Arto Lindsay’s art parade in Berlin brought together musicians and cultural initiatives, and invited pedestrians to contemplate and participate. Lindsay’s Penny Parade traveled from Unter den Linden to the Brandenburg Gate and ended at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt (House of World Cultures). Participants were: Afrika Yetu e.V., Fanfara Kalashnikov, Senior Street Art, Merve Verlag und Freunde, David Moss und der Chor der Kulturen der Welt, Jonathan Bepler, Guillermo Brown , Zac Dempster, Sam Forsythe, Matt Jackson, Daniel Jenatsch, Ross Manning, Letizia Monea, Ayaka Okutsu, Marivaldo Paim, Monica Soccol.

The program The Spirit of the Haus is part of 1989–2009: Das Haus der Kulturen and the World.

Arto Lindsay was born in Richmond, Virginia, in 1953. He spent many years in Brazil with his missionary parents. In New York, Lindsay began his artistic ambitions as a writer, but quickly became interested in the art and music scenes. He played in groups such as DNA, Locus Solus, The Lounge Lizards, and Ambitious Lovers. He collaborated with artists like They Might Be Giants, David Byrne, Laurie Anderson, Marc Ribot, Cibo Matto, Bill Frisell, Animal Collective, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Krisma, and Kip Hanrahan. Arto Lindsay appeared in a number of films. (Wikpedia, August 3, 2009)
