Museo Picasso Malaga / Interview with Artistic Director José Lebrero Stals

October 28, 2009

Not everyone knows that Pablo Picasso was born in Málaga. The Museo Picasso Málaga was created in response to Pablo Picasso’s desire for his work to be seen in the city where he was born in 1881. The initial idea for the museum arose in 1953, from the contacts that took place between Pablo Picasso and the Provincial Delegate for Fine Arts in Málaga.

In this video, the new artistic director of the museum, José Lebrero Stals, explains why it took 50 years until a museum with his work was realized in his home town. He also talks about the origins of the permanent collection of the museum, the museum’s departments and his future plans. As he points out, the museum will have a close look at the influence Pablo Picasso still has on contemporary artists.

In a temporary exhibition, the museum is currently showing a retrospective exhibition on the work of the Swiss artist Sophie Taeuber-Arp. An exhibition walk-through and interview with the show’s curator Estrella de Diego follows in the next episode.

The Museo Picasso Málaga in Málaga, Spain, is run by the Foundation Museo Picasso de Málaga and the Foundation Paul, Christine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso. The Paul, Christine and Bernanrd Ruiz-Picasso Foundation is the owner of the Collection, while the Museo Picasso de Málaga Foundation owns the museum buildings.
