British artist Isaac Julien is known for his multiple-screen video installations. Four of the works that he created throughout the last decade are now on display at SESC Pompeia / Videobrasil in São Paulo, Brazil. The exhibition is entitled Geopoetics and refers to the deep connection between artistic image and the way it positions itself in the world. Curated by Solange Farkas, it aims to show two central aspects of Isaac Julien’s work: His deep concern with cultural identity, social issues and politics, and his thorough attention to formal aspects. Geopoetics is Isaac Julien’s first solo show in Brazil.
Isaac Julien was born in 1960 in London, where he currently lives and works. After graduating from St Martin’s School of Art in 1984, where he studied painting and fine art film, Isaac Julien founded Sankofa Film and Video Collective (1983–1992), and was a founding member of Normal Films in 1991.
