At 9 a.m. on Wednesday 14th October 2009, the last participant of British artist Antony Gormley’s One & Other project, Emma Burns, stepped onto the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square in London. Two days before, when we filmed Trafalgar Square at dusk, it was a completely different scenery, as you can see in this video that we don’t want to withhold from you: One & Other at dusk, starring Michael Conlon.

Antony Gormley’s One & Other has seen a different person take their place on the Fourth Plinth every hour, 24 hours a day for 100 days. The project has been commissioned by the Mayor of London and produced by Artichoke in partnership with Sky Arts, and supported by Arts Council England.

More information about the project with a full list of plinthers profiles can be found at www.oneandother.co.uk.

During Frieze Art Fair 2009, The Embassy, a multi-disciplinary group show, presented works by Marco Brambilla, Terence Koh, Rosey Chan, Tom Gallant, Alastair Mackie, Oliver Clegg, Wolfe von Lenkiewicz, Bruce French, Henry Hudson, Michael Lisle-Taylor, Laurence Owen, Karim Rabik, Hugo Wilson and Yarisal & Kublitz. Curated by Dellal and Xerxes Cook, the exhibition was intended to be a “parody of outmoded cultural diplomacy in the form of an anonymous country’s embassy, a dystopia whose tyrannical government has tested the patience of its people and brought them to tipping point.” The show was produced by Alex Dellal’s 20 Hoxton Square Projects, in collaboration with Zoom Art Projects.

“A mixture of painting, sculpture and installation, works featured in The Embassy include a national anthem by the pianist Rosey Chan, a presidential palace built from mud by Alastair Mackie, a flag by Tom Gallant, and former service man, Michael Lisle-Taylor will present his Tournament of the Dirty Nurse, an ornately embroidered boxing ring still covered in the blood, sweat and tears from bouts that have taken place within it. Other works include paintings on old school desks by Oliver Clegg, lungs in three stages of the pulmonary cycle – shock, agitation and panic by Hugo Wilson and caricature regal portraits by Henry Hudson in his distinctive plasticine style.” (Excerpt from the press release).

The Embassy took place at the former residence of the Sierra Leonean ambassador to Britain, 33 Portland Place.

The Embassy, Private View, October 15, 2009. 33 Portland Place, London / UK.

At 9 a.m. on Wednesday 14th October 2009, the last participant of British artist Antony Gormley’s One & Other project, Emma Burns, stepped onto the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square in London. The 30 year old medical photographer from Darlington is one of 2,400 people of all ages, backgrounds and cultures and from all over the UK which have participated in this unique piece of art. They have travelled from as far afield as Kirkwall on the Orkney Islands to Belfast, Northern Ireland to be part of this collective portrait of the UK of 2009. Antony Gormley’s One & Other has seen a different person take their place on the Fourth Plinth every hour, 24 hours a day for 100 days. The project has been commissioned by the Mayor of London and produced by Artichoke in partnership with Sky Arts, and supported by Arts Council England.

The participants used her hour on the plinth in most different ways: There were activists, raising awareness for causes such as animal welfare, the environment, and human rights; creatives from painters to dancers who brought their art to the plinth; people who promoted themselves or their companies; and participants who simply did nothing. A full list of plinthers profiles can be found at www.oneandother.co.uk.

Altogether 2,400 participants were chosen at random by computer algorithm from nearly 35,000 applications received via the website www.oneandother.co.uk and through post. There was no audition process. The only four criteria – participants must be aged 16 or over and must live, or be staying in, the UK, an equal number of men and women were chosen, and the population of the UK was represented proportionally by choosing a certain number of people from each region.

Antony Gormley said: “Art should be for everyone, this was an experiment to see whether everyone could be involved in making it. Who can be represented in art? How can we make it? How can we experience it? These are questions that have exercised me for years. I am inspired and given hope by what we have done this last three months. Whatever goes on the plinth hereafter the square will never be the same; the memory of this summer’s living sculpture in all its diversity is indelible.”

Antony Gormley was born in London in 1950. He has participated in major group shows such as the Venice Biennale and the Kassel Documenta 8. Angel of the North and Quantum Cloud on the Thames in Greenwich are amongst the most known examples of contemporary British sculpture.

The Fourth Plinth project is funded by the Mayor of London and Arts Council England, London. It involves a rolling program of contemporary art commissions to be installed temporarily on the empty plinth in Trafalgar Square. Previous projects have been realized by Marc Quinn, Thomas Schütte, Mark Wallinger, Bill Woodrow, Rachel Whiteread. The next work to be installed as part of the Fourth Plinth commissioning process will be a scale replica of Nelson’s ship, HMS Victory, in a giant glass bottle, by Yinka Shonibare.

This is an interview with San Francisco-based artist Stephanie Syjuco. Stephanie Syjuco has conceived a project for this year’s Projects program of Frieze Art Fair. Her project called Copystand: an autonomous manufacturing zone is a workshop in which a small group of artists are making bootleg copies of other works exhibited in the fair, and an adjacent gallery stand where these works are presented for sale.

In this interview, Stephanie Syjuco talks about the idea behind her work Copystand, how it is received by the audience and gallerists, and her work in general.

For the group show “1969“, a large scale exhibition at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center in New York that opens on Sunday 25, 20009, Stephanie Syjuco is reproducing two iconic works from MoMA’s collection: Joseph Beuys’ “Sled” and Robert Morris’s “Untitled” felt work, which will be presented at P.S.1 in lieu of the originals.

Frieze Projects is a programme of artists’ commissions realised annually at Frieze Art Fair. It is curated by Neville Wakefield and includes seven new projects as well as The Cartier Award and collaborations with this year’s partner institutions CAC Vilnius (Lithuania) and Arte Contempo (Portugal).

The seven artists commissioned to create site-specific work for Frieze Art Fair 2009 are Mike Bouchet, Kim Coleman & Jenny Hogarth, Ruth Ewan, Ryan Gander, Per-Oskar Leu, Monika Sosnowska and Stephanie Syjuco.

As every year, Deutsche Bank is presenting an exhibition at their VIP Lounge at Frieze Art Fair. This year, the show is dedicated to the work of German photographer Thomas Struth. Deutsche Bank has over fifty of Struth’s earlier works in its collection. Many of them examine the 50s and 60s German city developments of the Wirtschaftswunder. The works presented at Frieze are photographs of forests, depicting an abundance of growing trees, creepers and plants of all descriptions.

If she ever wondered how many people fit into her gallery space, now Alison Jacques knows. The opening of the current exhibition Robert Mapplethorpe: A Season in Hell reminded visitors more of a Guinnes Book World Record attempt than a vernissage. The reason for this rush was obviously the announcement that the American singer-songwriter and artist Patti Smith would perform at the opening.

VernissageTV captured the event in this video, which is a short version of a full-length version that is available after the jump. In addition to the exhibition, the video shows Patti Smith performing her song “Because the Night” in an a capella version with support from the audience.

Robert Mapplethorpe: A Season in Hell brings together a range of works in a variety of media, including rarely seen collages. For the first time in a European gallery, 5 major early works are on display, a series of collages from 1968-69 when Robert Mapplethorpe was living with Patti Smith at the Chelsea Hotel in New York City.

“Drawing on the Catholic culture of his upbringing, Mapplethorpe was inspired to make shrine-like works out of a broad range of materials, from menʼs underwear to prayer cards. However these works, both formally and substantially, become transformed more into objects of fetish than images of devotion, revealing the incessant influence of his religious background on Mapplethorpeʼs life and art, and his irreverent and rebellious relationship to it. As Mapplethorpe himself said ‘A church has a certain magic and mystery for a child…. It still shows in how I arrange things.
In June 2009, conceptual artist John Baldessari received the Venice Biennale Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, now the Tate Modern in London dedicates him the most extensive retrospective to date in the UK.

“John Baldessari: Pure Beauty will bring together more than 130 works and examine the principal concerns of this legendary Californian artist. With humour and irony, Baldessari’s work dissects the ideas underlying artistic practice and questions the historically accepted rules of how to make art. Fascinated by language and meaning, he has always been interested in the connection between working in the visual field and working with words.” (Excerpt from the press release).

rAndom International is a London-based collective set up in 2002 by Stuart Wood, Flo Ortkrass and Hannes Koch. Their work explores the conflict between reinterpreting the cold nature of digital and the often hands-on approach of analogue. Most of their work is interactive with an intense curiosity applied to experimental processes.

rAndom International have won prestigious design awards such as the iF Desgin Award 2005 and 2006. At Design Miami Basel they presented their installation Audience that has been awarded an honorable mention in the Interactive Art category of the Prix Ars Electronica 2009.

We had a look at their work several times now. At Scope Miami 2006, Flo Ortkrass showed us rAndom International’s PixelRoller, Temporary Graffiti and the Temporary Light Printing Machine, at Design Miami Basel 2009 Hannes Koch talked about their installation Audience. Now, at the exhibition Design High at Louise Blouin Foundation in London we met with Hannes Koch and Flo Ortkrass again, speaking about the piece “Study of a Mirror” and their work in general.

Viennese-born designer Robert Stadler studied design at the Istituto Europeo di Design in Milan, Italy and then at ENSCI / Les Ateliers in Paris. In Paris, he co-founded the Radi Designers group. Since 2000 he has been working solo while simultaneously continuing his activity with the group. He lives and works in Paris and Rio de Janeiro.

Currently Robert Stadler is taking part in the exhibition Design High at Louise Blouin Foundation in London. He presents two works: the living room suite “Tephra Formations” and the dumbbell set “Foreveryoung (Item for Men)”.

“Stadler revels exploring the exhitibion space in order to scramble the usual categories of art and design. He questions the status of the object as work of art or product as well as the boundaries between preciousness and lowliness, elegance and vulgarity, between the serious and the absurd. … Stadler intervenes in very diverse fields, obliterating all hierarchies between free proposals and industrial commissions.” (excerpt from the press release)

In this video, Robert Stadler talks about his pieces on display at the Design High exhibition, his work between the fields of art and design, the pros and cons of free work and commissions, and his sources of inspiration.

On the occasion of the exhibition Design High at Louise Blouin Foundation in London VernissageTV met up with Joep van Lieshout, who presented the work Wombhouse in the show.

In this video, Joep van Lieshout talks about his background, his work between the poles of art and design, how his work changed over the years, his interest in the human body, the material he uses, and his current and upcoming projects such as very large installation called Cradle to Cradle, which is about the recycling of human beings and will be presented at Winzavod Contemporary Art Center in Moscow in September / October 2009.

Joep van Lieshout (born 1963 in Ravenstein, Netherlands) is the founder of Atelier Van Lieshout (AVL). He lives and works in Rotterdam since 1987. He studied at the Acacemy of Modern Art, Rotterdam. Since 1995, AVL creates work in the realm of installation, design, furniture and architecture. The name Atelier Van Lieshout emphasizes the fact that the works of art do not stem solely from the creative brain of Joep van Lieshout, but are produced by a creative team of artists, designers and architects.

One of the many applications and techniques used by AVL are the large polyester constructions in striking, bright colors. These polyester constructions, of which the large mobile home units are the best known, form the AVL trademark. Recurring themes in the work of AVL are autarky, power, politics and sex. Works of AVL can be found in private collections and several museums.

The work Wombhouse (2004) that is on display at the Design High exhibition at Louise Blouin Foundation is a utility unit that acts as the technical core for a house. AVL describes it as follows: “The womb is not only every human’s first dwelling, but also the only human body part that can be inhabited by another individual. Prefabricated, the technical core contains all of the essential functions of a building: sanitation, kitchen, heating, ventilation. Normally, this core is an anonymous, square object. By contrast, Wombhouse has an exciting, poetic and enchanting shape. The womb contains a bedroom in the uterus – the safest place in the mind of human beings – along with heating, air-conditioning, electrical systems, a kitchen and a shower. One ovary contains the minibar; the other the toilet. Wombhouse can make any space function as a home; the structure requires only a roof and walls to protect it from the climate. Put the plug in the socket, and everything will work.”

AVL’s workshop is situated in a large old warehouse in the harbors of Rotterdam. Artworks and a host of other products begin their lives here before traveling to points around the globe. The workshop has different departments, a fiberglass, sculpture, wood, and metal workshops. AVL’s 20 employees have different backgrounds and origins.

Design High / Louise Blouin Foundation, London. Interview with Joep van Lieshout. June 24, 2009. Design High runs until August 30, 2009.

Norman McLaren is one of the most respected animators / filmmakers in the history of experimental cinema. He used film to record images, but also as a canvas, experimenting with etching, drawing and painting directly on filmstrip. He created an impressive body of work at the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) and received numerous awards, including an Oscar for “Neighbours” (1952) and a Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival for “Blinkity Blank” (1955). For Azumi, Norman McLaren is one of the few artists to have achieved a balance in creating entertaining work that is also experimental and conceptual.

Shin Azumi was born and raised in Japan. He studied at the Royal College of Art in the UK, and in the mid-1990s set up a London studio with his associate Tomoko Azumi. In 2005 Shin Azumi set up a new solo practice, “a studio”. His works are widely recognized in Europe and have been exhibited in such prestigious venues as the Design Museum in the UK, the Vitra Design Museum in Germany and the Stedelijk Museum in the Netherlands.

Azumi’s “FlowLounge” (2006) is a new series of office furniture shown at Chelsea space for the first time in Europe. Its inspiration derives from the garden, conceptually bringing the outside into an interior space, creating a flexible and light atmosphere. “Shower of Light” (2006) also plays with our imagination and encourages a unique spatial experience. Azumi’s designs, together with McLaren’s films, transform Chelsea space into a fluid space of outside, inside, up and down.

Chelsea space is a public gallery next to Tate Britain. Chelsea space is part of the Chelsea College of Art & Design and its programme which includes public exhibitions, lectures, concerts and events, some of which are organized in collaboration with the Tate Britain. Exhibitions director, Donald Smith says, “The intention for CHELSEA space is to create a research development centre for invited art and design professionals, providing a gallery space, library research facilities, and a platform to develop personal projects that may otherwise remain unrealised. An invitation to curate at CHELSEA space is not in expectation of definitive answers, but rather to open up discussion.” We met Donald Smith on occasion of the new exhibition “Shin Azumi and Norman McLaren”. He talks about the exhibition and the gallery. Chelsea space, London, May 16, 2007.
