Marc Lee: Breaking The News – Be a News-Jockey / ZKM | YOU_ser: The Century of the Consumer / Interview

Shortly before the opening of the exhibition YOU_ser: The Century of the Consumer at the ZKM | Center for Art and Media we had a conversation with the artist Marc Lee about his interactive work “Breaking The News – Be a News-Jockey“. “Breaking The News” is an interactive installation that transmits information from the internet in realtime after the user enters a headline or a favorite word. The content of the audio-visual streams is made up of the texts, videos, sounds and images found on Web Services such as Google Video, Flickr, YouTube or Wikipedia. The user can further manipulate the presentation by changing the news from critical to entertaining. If the user / News-Jockey needs a break, he can run the auto-mode and the installation will automatically create audiovisual presentations by using the up-to-date headlines from Google News. There’s a web version of “Breaking The News – Be a News-Jockey” called Oamos: Click here! ZKM | Media Museum: YOU_ser. The Century of the Consumer (October 21, 2007 – December 31, 2008). ZKM | Zentrum für Kunst- und Medientechnologie, Karlsruhe / Germany. October 20, 2007.
