The exhibition Dissidances at the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo in Sevilla, Spain was a major retrospective of Nancy Spero’s work. In this video we have a closer look at the work Let the Priests Tremble… Let the Priests Tremble … , 1998/2008, is a large hand-printed wall installation. Nancy Spero produced this installation in the Ikon Gallery in London. In it, strong, athletic women dance to the sound of a passage from an essay by Hélène Cixous from her book The Laugh of the Medusa.

The Nancy Spero exhibition Dissidances at the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporaneo in Sevilla, Spain, was a re-encounter with the artist’s work Maypole: take no prisoners (2007).
Nancy Spero produced this installation for the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007 for the Italian Pavilion, curated by Robert Storr (see: Venice Biennial 2007). The piece is a maypole with 200 treated and painted aluminum heads that, in the words of the artist, she has cannibalized from her war paintings of the 1960s.
Nancy Spero was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1926. She is regarded as one of the pioneers of feminist art and was a key figure on the dissident New York scene of the 1960s and 70s, along with artists like Judy Chicago, Miriam Shapiro, Martha Rosler, Faith Ringold and Adrian Piper, among others. Nancy Spero. Dissidances is the fist major retrospective of Nancy Spero’s work to be mounted in both Europe and the United States.
