Art and the City. Public Art Festival in Zürich West

Art and the City is a public art festival that runs from 9 June until 23 September 2012 in Zürich West, a district in Zürich (Switzerland) that has undergone a dramatic transformation in the recent years. To experience this up-and-coming city district of Zürich, Art and the City invited more than 40 artists and artist groups from all over the world for an exhibition that includes sculptures, installations, performances, posters and interventions. This video takes you on a rather subjective and selective tour of the exhibition on 1 August, the Swiss National Day (which explains the empty streets and the rubber dinghies).

The exhibition includes artists who have been addressing issues of urban development since the 1970s such as Richard Tuttle, Fred Sandback, Yona Friedman and Charlotte Posenenske, as well as a younger generation of artists such as Christian Jankowski, Oscar Tuazon, Los Carpinteros, and Ai Weiwei.

Art and the City has been initiated by the Public Art Task Force (Arbeitsgruppe Kunst im öffentlichen Raum). The exhibition has been put together by the freelance curator and writer Christoph Doswald.

PS: As part of the Art and the City Public Art Festival, walking artist Hamish Fulton performed one of his slow walks along the Limmat river, called Limmat Art Walk Zürich 2012.

Art Basel Miami Beach 2011: Art Public

The Art Public section of Art Basel Miami Beach presents sculptures, performances and site-specific performances. The 2011 edition was special because it inaugurated a new collaboration with the Bass Museum of Art. This presentation in the public space between the Bass Museum and the Oceanfront with most of the works placed in Collins Park compliments the indoor experience of Art Basel in the Convention Center.

Curated by Christine Y. Kim, Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at LACMA and Co-Founder of LAND, Art Public featured work by Darren Bader, Nina Beier, Chakaia Booker, Andrea Bowers and Olga Koumoundouros, Bruce Conner, Kate Costello, Jen DeNike, Gardar Eide Einarsson, Rachel Feinstein, Theaster Gates, Antony Gormley, Damien Hirst, Thomas Houseago, Richard Hughes, Robert Indiana, Glenn Kaino, Anish Kapoor, Robert Melee, Anthony Pearson, George Rickey, Eva Rothschild, Eduardo Sarabia, Banks Violette, and Zhang Huan.

This video provides you with a walk-through on the last day of Art Basel Miami Beach. VernissageTV also captured the performances of Glenn Kaino and Theaster Gates on the Art Public Opening Night, as well as Jen DeNike’s performance (coming soon). There’s also a video on how to use Gardar Eide Einarsson’s installation (already available on our Members page).

Frieze Sculpture Park 2011

For some people the best thing about Frieze Art Fair in London is the Frieze Sculpture Park. Located just a short walk from the main fair site in the beautiful surroundings of the English Garden the Sculpture Park provides the opportunity to enjoy contemporary art in a more relaxed way. This year curator David Thorp has selected sculptures by Neha Choksi (Echo of the Inside. Project 88), Johan Creten (Le Banc des Amoureux. Almine Rech Gallery), Claudia Fontes (Decoy for Andean Condor. Ignacio Liprandi Arte Contemporáneo), Alicia Framis (Cartas al cielo. Annet Gelink Gallery), Tom Friedman (Circle Dance. Stephen Friedman Gallery), Gimhongsok (A Star. Kukje Gallery / Tina Kim Gallery), Des Hughes (Angry Pins. Ancient & Modern), Thomas Houseago (Hermaphrodite. Hauser & Wirth), Eva Koťátková & Petr Koťátko (Lost and Found. Hunt Kastner), Will Ryman (Icon. Paul Kasmin Gallery), Kiki Smith (Seer. Timothy Taylor Gallery), and Gavin Turk (Ajar.
