Interview with Art Cologne Director Daniel Hug / Part 1/2

After it had to take strong criticism for some years, the world’s once largest and most important art fair, the Art Cologne, enjoyed exuberant reviews last year – “the miracle of the Rhine” (FAZ, April 24, 2009). The success of last year’s edition was attributed by most observers to the new director of the fair, the former gallerist Daniel Hug.

Now the Art Cologne 2010, 44th Internationaler Kunstmarkt, is only days away. It’s Daniel Hug’s second fair. We met with Daniel Hug in the Caféteria of Kunsthaus Zürich. In the first part of the interview, he talks about his background, how he became director of Art Cologne, and the challenges he was facing.

In the second part that we will publish tomorrow, Daniel Hug talks about the changes he made after taking over Art Cologne and gives an outlook on the upcoming fair that starts with the Vernissage on 20th April 2010.
