Kerstin Drechsel: Mittelerde / September Berlin Gallery, Berlin

September is a new gallery that opened up this September in Charlottenstrasse 1 in Berlin, near former Checkpoint Charly. The gallery is run by Oliver Koerner von Gustorf und Frank Müller. The gallery started its exhibition program with a solo show with new works by Berlin-based artist Kerstin Drechsel. The exhibition entitled “Mittelerde (Middle Earth)” shows a series of paintings and a group of sculptures. With the paintings Kerstin Drechsel examines the apartment of a Heavy Metal fan. The sculptures are based on the forms of poured lead figures. “Greatly enlarged and sprayed in white industrial enamel, these relics from a New Year’s Eve ritual resemble semi-abstract shapes upon which all manner of esoteric or art historical interpretation can be projected” (excerpt from the press release (pdf)). On the occasion of the exhibition Mittelerde, Vice Versa Verlag is publishing a catalogue that features an interview with the artist as well as an essay by Frank Wagner. September Gallery Berlin, opening, September 29, 2007.
