Mari Spirito in conversation with Theodore Bouloukos at Cuchifritos, New York

Cuchifritos, a program of the Artists Alliance, Inc., is a small art gallery located inside the Essex Street Market in New York. Vernissage TV’s New York Correspondent Theodore Bouloukos recently spoke with Mari Spirito, Director of 303 Gallery in Chelsea, about curating her second Cuchifritos show, entitled “Up as if Down.” For this show, she selected the artists, Shara Hughes, Peter Kreidler and Moises Saman, for a program that subverted the expected with the unexpected. In this video, Mari Spirito talks about the works on display, and the differences between her work as Director of 303 Gallery and as an independent curator, Cuchifritos is among a growing number of Lower East Side galleries that have sprung up in anticipation of the new Sanaa-designed New Museum of Contemporary Art opening in December on the Bowery in New York, Independent curators are invited to submit proposals for this project space. Interview: 2 October 2007. Camera: Darren Trenchard.
