Interview with Johan Holten, Director Heidelberger Kunstverein / Art Cologne 2009

At Art Cologne 2009 the ADKV Art Cologne Preis für Kunstvereine (Prize for Art Associations) was awarded to the Heidelberger Kunstverein. The Heidelberger Kunstverein is one of about 270 art associations in Germany. Each year, the Association of German Kunstvereine (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Deutscher Kunstvereine / ADKV) donates this price for outstanding curatorial practice and educational programs.

In this interview with the director of the Heidelberger Kunstverein, Johan Holten, talks about the specific nature of the art associations in Germany – their origin, their specific status between the market place and the state run museums – and the Heidelberger Kunstverein in particular: its tradition and its current program. He also talks about the importance of working outside the centers of contemporary art production.
