Thomas Feuerstein: Planet Paradies / 401contemporary, Berlin

The centerpiece of Austrian artist Thomas Feuerstein’s exhibition “Planet Paradies” at the gallery 401contemporary in Berlin is the installation Manna-Maschine III. A glass bioreactor is connected with tubes that run across the gallery space. In the machine, certain types of green algae are growing. The installation enables plankton to photosynthesise.

From the Manna-Machine, other works are derived. The green manna is combined with linseed oil and resin to create the painting material for Thomas Feuerstein’s Harvest Pictures. “In the exhibition Planet Paradise, Feuerstein tells the tale of an artist who mixes his own pigments and thereby develops a manna that he can use as pigment for his paintings, but that also serves as a food and energy source and reduces the level of carbon dioxide in the air.” (Excerpt from the press release).

Thomas Feuerstein was born in Innsbruck, Austria, in 1968. He studied philosophy and history. He lives and works in Innsbruck, Austria.
