Grand Basel is a new show that presents masterpieces of automotive design. Grand Basel celebrates its world premiere in Basel, Switzerland, but there are also editions planned in Miami Beach and Hong Kong (yes, the show is run by MCH Group, that is also responsible for Art Basel). Grand Basel wants to “explore the relationship between cars, humans, nature, architecture and design, bringing together automobiles of the past, present and future in an unrivalled, pioneering setting. The show is a completely new approach to exhibiting, discussing and honouring the car.” So what’s on display? There are cars every petrolhead knows, such as Mercedes 300 SL, Porsche 911, Ferrari Daytona, Lamborghini Countach, Jaguar E-Type etc. But there are also lesser known cars such as the Iso Rivolta 300 GT (Red Army Fraction-leader Andreas Baader was driving one), the Swiss 70s supercar Monteverdi Hai 450 GTS, the Citroen DS 19 Chapron “Le Dandy” (1958), futuristic show cars such as the 1978 Lancia Sibilo Bertone, Giugiaro’s GM Corvair-based Bertone show car “Testudo”, Zagato’s tiny electric car “Zele” (1974) – and even Pablo Picasso’s 1963 Lincoln Continental is on display. Brand new cars are exhibited as well, such as the new Tesla Roadster (scheduled for 2020). This video provides you with a look at some of the highlights of the show.
