Jacob talks about how this art of fantasy coffin making came about and what it means, how the coffins are made, what motifs are possible, and how the pajama collection came about.
Jacob’s father Joseph Ashong is a coffin artist born in 1947 in Ghana. Internationally renowned as Paa Joe, he is considered as one of the most important Ghanaian coffin artists. His contemporary coffins that take the shape of things that reflect the profession, interests or characteristics of the deceased can be found in many art museums worldwide. His work has been featured in major exhibitions in institutions such as the Fondation Cartier Paris or the Brooklyn Museum.
