Die Macherei (The Makery) / Urban Design in Munich

On our recent trip to Munich, we had a look at British sculptor Phyllida Barlow’s retrospective at Haus der Kunst, but also had the chance to talk to architect Fabian Ochs. Fabian Ochs is the co-founder of OSA Ochs Schmidhuber Architects. We have known Fabian Ochs and his business partner Florian Schmidhuber since their work for the art fair Munich Contempo in 2010. Currently, they are responsible for the design of “Die Macherei” (The Makery), a new office and commercial district built on the former site of the Temmler pharmaceutical company in the Berg am Laim area of Munich.

The project received two awards, the European Property Award 2019-2020, and the 2021 Audience Award of the architecture blog “MuenchenArchitektur” in the commercial and administration category. The project is being planned on behalf of Art-Invest Real Estate and Accumulata Real Estate Group and comprises of architecture designs by Holger Meyer Architektur, Hollwich Kushner, and OSA Ochs Schmidhuber Architekten.

In this video, Fabian Ochs talks about the architectural language and unique features of the project, the importance of the project for the district, and his vision for Munich’s urban future.

When Herzog & de Meuron began work on the Fünf Höfe in Munich in 1998, Florian Schmidhuber was appointed to the team. At Herzog & de Meuron, he gets to know Fabian Ochs. In 2000, they founded their own office: OS A Ochs Schmidhuber Architekten.
