Rosa Barba (born 1972) is a German-Italian artist and filmmaker. Her work is characterized by a conceptual exploration of film. Her use of analogue film has been linked to the work of other contemporary artists such as Tacita Dean. Rosa Barba lives and works in Berlin (Germany). Until January 16, 2021, the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin is presenting a special exhibition of her work titled “In a Perpetual Now”. The show features key pieces of her work created between 2009 and 2021, and a new film.
At Art Cologne 2021, the gallery Esther Schipper presented Rosa Barba’s work “Uncertain Theme – and Therefore Abstract”. The piece is made of steel, glass, 35mm film and a motor. “In a framed glass box, strips of celluloid are in constant movement. Extending from a central axis to the edges of the frame, the strips continuously tighten and loosen, as if lines were being drawn, only to collapse again and again before the drawing is completed.” (official description).
