Kenzo Onoda: Lichtung – Clearing / Hebel_121 Basel

Hebel_121 art spaces’ first exhibition in 2024 is a solo show by Japanese artist Kenzo Onoda. Lichtung – Clearing is a video projection by Kenzo Onoda, a place of light. In a deep forest with dense trees, a clearing is created when a tree falls and transforms the place into a space of light, a place or a space where the artist wants to live. Faltung – Folding is a video work by Kenzo Onoda in connection with the events around Fukushima almost 13 years ago, a silent call for respect for nature, people and the environment.

Kenzo Onoda was born in Maebashi City, Gunma, in 1961. He studied at Osaka University of Arts, Department of Art Planning, majoring in acoustics. He worked as an engineer at Japanese telecommunications and research company NTT Group for many years, before taking up artwork in his 40s. Onoda’s works reflect his technical knowledge and experience of sound and computer systems. Describing his work as “minimalism,” Onoda’s works, which question various human perceptions using a minimum of sound and color movement, show the influence of avant-garde composer and visual artist John Cage (1912–1992).
