Jésus Rafael-Soto: Esfera Amarilla, 1984 / Art Basel 2023 Unlimited

Official description: The monumental sculpture Esfera Amarilla has never been exhibited before. It makes its debut here to mark the approaching centennial anniversary of Venezuelan artist Jesús Rafael Soto, whose kinetic sculptures and environments often played with the juxtaposition of solid and void, deliberately unsettling the act of viewing by blurring the distinction between reality and illusion. The selected work shows the artist’s main motivations: the perception of matter and energy as suggested by the display of light, color, and movement. Jesús Rafael Soto (born 1923 in Cuidad Bolívar, Venezuela; died 2005 in Paris) was a painter and sculptor, and was one of the main exponents of Kinetic art. He was awarded several honors, and also carried out numerous public works projects. His work is part of renowned institutions and collections around the world.
