Torkwase Dyson: Errantry, 2024 / Art Basel 2024 Unlimited

Torkwase Dyson: Errantry, 2024 / Gray, Pace Gallery at Art Basel 2024 Unlimited. Basel (Switzerland), June 13, 2024. Official description: Torkwase Dyson’s monumental sculpture Errantry deploys geometric forms to create an interactive, architectural space. Dyson references histories of enslavement and architectures of dispossession to further examine human geography and propose spatial liberation strategies within a rubric Dyson calls ‘Black Compositional Thought.’ The artist states, ‘as we navigate built environments we did not design, we’ve learned through our experiences that authority over one’s mind/body in the labyrinth of forms, spaces, and objects is a question of race, composition, and materiality. We must be able to interrogate current infrastructure with new design solutions to advance environmental conditions with our political and material futures in mind.’ Torkwase Dyson (born 1973 in Chicago) employs painting, drawing, installation, and sculpture to distill the spatial and affective residues of diasporic histories and envision new modes of environmental liberation. Dyson lives and works in Beacon, New York.
