Maria Nepomuceno: Untitled, 2010. Victoria Miro at Panorama Monferrato

Maria Nepomuceno: Untitled, 2010. Victoria Miro at Panorama Monferrato, a project by Italics. Camagna (Italy), September 5, 2024.
Exhibition text: Maria Nepomuceno interweaves ancient and modern craft techniques to create complex sculptures from rope, straw, beads, playful ceramic elements and objects of various sizes. While often made in carnival-like colors, her works, which explore the potentially endless combinations of the rope coils she makes, are culturally and metaphorically rich. Her sculptures – organic forms, vegetational forms, and landscapes which range from the microscopic to the macrocosmic – interact playfully with space, often inviting tactile exploration.
The work Untitled is emblematic of Nepomuceno’s unique practice and interest in spiraling forms that symbolize the volutes that are naturally present throughout the universe, from galaxies to DNA, which are represented through the words and techniques of her own linguistic tradition.
