Until November 2, 2024, David Zwirner in Los Angeles is presenting the exhibition “At Home: Alice Neel in the Queer World,” curated by Hilton Als. Located at 606 N Western Avenue, this exhibition continues the gallery’s tradition of showcasing curated displays that explore various aspects of Neel’s timeless work. It follows Als’s earlier acclaimed exhibition, “Alice Neel, Uptown,” which was held at David Zwirner New York in 2017.
Featuring works from both museum and private collections, including rare pieces from The Estate of Alice Neel, the paintings on display depict a range of figures, from prominent cultural and political figures to personal acquaintances and friends. Together, they create a collective portrait that both reflects and challenges the understanding of the queer community during Neel’s era and the artist’s role within it. As
Als notes, this exhibition includes “not just portraits of gay people but those of theorists, activists, politicians, and so on who would qualify as queer by virtue of their different take in their given field and thus the world. So doing, they reflect Alice’s own interest in and commitment to difference.” Among those portrayed are Allen Ginsberg, Dennis Florio, David and Catherine Saalfield, Richard Gibbs, John Cheim, Kris Kristen, Robert Avedis Hagopian, Henry Geldzahler, Mayor Koch, and Bella Abzug.
