Protoplast / T66 Kulturwerk, Freiburg

Kulturwerk T66 in Freiburg (Germany) is showing new works by the Swiss art collective Protoplast as part of the “Curator’s Choice” exhibition series. Protoplast consists of three anonymous team members who can be recognized by the black suitcases they always carry with them. The iconic suitcase symbol also serves as the group’s logo. Protoplast was founded in 1990 in response to the question of the “contemporary, human company”. Based on this question, the program of imaginary products was initially presented to the public.

This was developed, presented and completed by Protoplast until 2009. The current program of generating artefacts began in 2010. Protoplast believes that artefacts can only be experienced in person, which is why the group of three deliberately refrains from using words, texts and essays to describe their work. According to the dictionary, the term artifact refers to image disturbances in computer technology, faulty causality in diagnostics or man-made objects in culture, history and archaeology.

The Protoplast group has become known in recent years through exhibitions in Switzerland and abroad, e.g. at Kunsthalle Basel, Kunst Raum Riehen, Kunsthaus Langenthal, Kunsthaus Pasquart, The Pool Art Space Düsseldorf, Galerie Sammlung Amann and other art institutions.

In the two rooms of Kulturwerk T66, Protoplast is showing three “ghastly boxes” and ten “vehement oil paintings”. The exhibition was curated by Helge Emmaneel and runs until February 23, 2025.
