Fresco Sonoro is a site-specific sound installation by Mexican composer and organist Mauricio Silva Orendain, presented at Basel Social Club’s Office 2026 edition during Art Basel week in June 2026. Located on the lower levels of a vacant multi-story office building at Erdbeergraben 1 in Basel—specifically amid the spiral ramp and acoustics of the parking garage—the work transforms the raw concrete environment into a resonant sonic space.

The installation centers on pipe organs, with individual pipes functioning as independent sound sources. Dynamic control of airflow generates shifting timbres and textures, while the garage’s expansive, reverberant architecture amplifies and shapes the sound naturally. This approach highlights the materiality of sound, its interaction with physical space, and the organ’s potential as both instrument and sculptural object. Rather than traditional sacred or concert-hall settings, the piece relocates the organ into an industrial, underground context, creating an immersive auditory experience that evolves over time.

Building on Orendain’s earlier MA recital work—“Fresco Sonoro: Triptych for three organs and spatial audio” (2025)—this version adapts the concept to the unique venue. Visitors encounter layers of microtonal and textural sound that interact with the building’s structure, evoking a sonic fresco painted through resonance rather than pigment. Live performances by the artist complemented the installation during the event.
