Jonathan Lasker, Bernhard Martin at Thomas Schulte Gallery, Berlin / Gallery Weekend Berlin 2008

Galerie Thomas Schulte participates in the Gallery Weekend Berlin 2008 with two artists: Jonathan Lasker and Bernhard Martin. It’s the second solo show at Thomas Schulte for Jonathan Lasker, and the first for Bernhard Martin. Jonathan Lasker was born 1948 in Jersey City, he lives and works in New York City. On display at the gallery are new abstract paintings. I’ve found an interesting thought about Laskers work: “Sometimes abstract painting seems like a deliberate endgame testing its own limited permutations. One could now create a databank storing every scanned abstract picture of the last century to test each new one against it; the majority would probably match too easily. In this context, the achievement of Jonathan Lasker is all the more impressive, as he has forged a new vocabulary from the most obvious, if not degraded, elements – doodles, scribbles and seemingly spontaneous marks: all the gestural tropes of expressionism frozen and re-presented with the glacial accuracy of foresight.” Adrian Dannatt in The Art Newspaper, No. 142).
Bernhard Martin was born 1966 in Hannover, he lives and works in Berlin. He is one of a few artists who uses both painting and installation, the connecting link being his drawings. At Thomas Schulte he shows new sculptural installations and drawings.
