Olaf Val: Monkey Up / Plug.in / Basel, Switzerland / Interview

The exhibition Olaf Val – Monkey Up at [plug.in] in Basel, Switzerland, presents five interactive installations by Olaf Val (Digigripper, Display, Spielotop, SwingUp Games, Verstaerker) and as a premiere, a new video Olaf Val produced in collaboration with Catrine Val (Monkey Up). “Monkey Up” is hacker slang for hacking together hardware for a particular task, especially a one-shot job. Connotes an extremely crufty and consciously temporary solution. As the titel of the exhibition the term is transfered from hacker-hardware to general areas of life. What kind of changes to everyday life does the digital cross-linking bring about, what kind of problems arise in wider societal contexts?
An integral part of Olaf Val’s work are the workshops he runs, where you can learn to build and program your own minimalistic handheld computergame. The workshop at [plug.in] takes place on November 1st, 2008.
In this video, Olaf Val talks about his work and demonstrates the interactive installation Digigripper for us. The exhibition runs until November 9, 2008.
