Massimo Bartolini: Untitled (Wave) at dOCUMENTA (13)

Italian artist Massimo Bartolini’s work for dOCUMENTA (13) is an outdoor installation called Untitled (Wave). The work that is placed in front of the Orangerie in the Karlsaue Park consists of a pool in which a wave sloshes back and forth evenly and endlessly. Bartolini has first shown this work in the gardens of Villa Medici in Rome in 2000, and in 2001 in the outdoor sculpture gallery of P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center in New York (curated by P.S.1 Senior Curator Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev).

“For Bartolini, water, with its life-giving power, symbolizes the eternal transformation of all things in the universe. In Untitled (Wave), water is witness and representation of the dynamics of the life-cycle, migrating from its liquid form and becoming an inherent part of the green field it has nourished.” (quote from P.S.1 website).

Massimo Bartolini was born in 1962 in Cecina near Florence (Italy). He works in various materials and techniques, such as sculpture, video, performance, and photography.
