Doa Aly Studio Visit, Cairo (Egypt)

Doa Aly Studio Visit is the second short film that we produced in conjunction with the workshop that we were invited to by the Egyptian Art TV channel Medrar TV, with the participants Medrar.TV, Mada Masr, Ahram Online Culture, and VernissageTV, supported by Pro Helvetia.

Doa Aly was born in Cairo in 1976. In 2001, she graduated with a BA in painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Cairo. She developed an interest in the human body and movement. In this video, we meet Doa Aly in her studio in Cairo, where she shows us some of her work, and talks about the beginnings of her career, her inspiration, her use of different means of expression such as drawing, performance, and video, and recent projects.

Doa Aly has been shown in a number of group shows such as Port City at the Arnolfini Museum, Bristol, UK, Recognise at the Contemporary Art Forum, London, UK, and Dessins Projets at l’Appartement 22 in Rabat, Morocco. In 2006 and 2007 she participated in the 7th Dakar Biennial, Senegal, Snap Judgements curated by Okwui Enwezor at the International Center of Photography in New York, and The Maghreb Connection at the Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève. Her work has been screened in 2007 as part of In Focus at the Tate Modern in London and at the Istanbul Biennial 2009 curated by WHW.
