For Fondation Beyeler’s annual benefit gala, artist Rirkrit Tiravanija created a metaphorical participatory journey from hell to paradise that is loosely and abstractly based on Dante’s “Commedia”. The following day the public had a chance to make the trip as well. The different stages include an immigration zone, a speaker’s tower, a waiting room, the devil’s office, and a confessional box.
Rirkrit Tiravanija was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1961 and is widely recognized as one of the most influential artists of his generation. His work defies media-based description, as his practice combines traditional object making, public and private performances, teaching, and other forms of public service and social action.
