On the occasion of our visit to Fondazione Prada during Milano Art Week 2019 we discovered Walter De Maria’s “Bel Air Trilogy” as part of Fondazione Prada’s “Atlas” exhibition that presents artworks from the Prada Collection. Walter De Maria’s Bel Air Trilogy (2000-2011) consists of 3 elements: stainless steel rods with 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air two-tone hardtop classic cars.
Bel Air Trilogy (2000–2011) consists of three restored 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air automobiles in a two-tone color scheme. All three cars are painted in “Gypsy Red” and “Shoreline Beige.” The front windshield of each car has been pierced by a 12-foot-long stainless steel rod. It runs through the interior of the passenger compartment parallel to the chassis and exits through the rear window. Each rod has a distinct geometric shape, either a square, a circle, or a triangle.
