This film documents Dutch artist Joep van Lieshout’s monumental installation “The Voyage” in the Unlimited sector of Art Basel in Basel 2025, including interviews with Joep van Lieshout, Natalie Kovacs and Thomas Krinzinger.
“This work is about a voyage to utopia, to an unknown place—a better place—a garden of Eden—a place where we hope to find happiness, where we dream of creating a new world, a parallel or better world.”
— Joep van Lieshout
In collaboration with Galerie Krinzinger, OMR, Jousse Enterprise, and Galerie Ron Mandos, Atelier Van Lieshout presents The Voyage – A March to Utopia, a large-scale installation at Art Basel Basel 2025 that explores humanity’s ongoing search for an improved existence. The work combines sculpture, caravan elements, and assembled objects to form a procession of machines, monuments, and items.
The installation is led by The Leader, a restored discarded scooter positioned as a symbol of resilience. The procession includes improvised medical units, survival equipment, memorials, and various cargo items. It depicts progression alongside deterioration, with themes of survival and hope intertwined.
Composed of numerous objects, sculptures, and functional machines, The Voyage represents the persistent pursuit of happiness. The parade incorporates elements such as modified wheelchairs with attached beer holders, snack trays, and ashtrays; devices designed for psychic experiences; and mobile surgical units constructed from everyday materials. The work addresses mobility, invention, and inclusion within contexts of necessity and adaptation.
This video documents the installation in its exhibition setting, capturing the full scope of the procession and its components.
