Florian Neufeldt at Kunstresidenz Bad Gastein 2012

Florian Neufeldt is one of the seven artists that have been invited to the Kunstresidenz Artist-in-Residence program of Bad Gastein’s Summer Art Festival Sommer.Frische.Kunst. We had the chance to meet the artist on the occasion of the closing exhibition of the artist summer residence. In this video, Florian Neufeldt talks about the two works that he has created during his stay in Bad Gastein.

Florian Neufeldt was born in 1976 in Bonn (Germany). He studied sociology, philosophy, and history at Universität zu Köln and FU Berlin. From 1997 to 1999 he studied sculpture at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under Tony Cragg. “The work of Florian Neufeldt (b. 1976, Bonn), who studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, revolves around thematic fields such as control, aggression, and danger, but essentially also the definition and demarcation of architectural space. Neufeldt makes incursions into given architectural situations or carries out alterations which always serve the purpose of appropriating space and dominating it in unexpected ways. In this way he creates brutal settings and reconfigurations out of simple materials; precarious spatial structures which, stable or unstable, give the artist a feel for the space. Found objects such as ladders and furniture are treated in a similar way. He takes them apart, deprives them of their functions and reassembles them to create new sculptural entities which often feature definite architectural references, all the while retaining something of the original character of the objects.” (Excerpt from the press release of Florian Neufeldt’s 2011 solo exhibition at Galerie Opdahl).
