David Ellis: Flyway / The Theory Icon Project, New York

April 9, 2008

During Armory Week in New York, Roebling Hall presented the artist David Ellis with a kinetic installation entitled “Cockfight” at Volta New York (see our coverage of Volta NY). Interested in seeing more we went to the Theory store at Gansevoort Street where Ellis did a week-long painting performance. David Ellis works within a variety of disciplines. While his “Battle of the Birds” would have been a perfect contribution to the current exhibition at the Museum Tinguely, “Flyway” is both performance and exhibition. Commissioned by the Theory Icon Project, David Ellis painted every day from morning until night in an airplane hangar inspired structure. This entire process has been captured in stop frame animation that Ellis calls Motion Painting. Finally, the finished works will be installed at the Theory flagship store from April 7th until June 2nd, 2008. In this video, artist David Ellis, producer Matthew Mascotte, cinematographer Chris Keohane, and sound designer Roberto Carlos Lange talk about the project. The Theory store, New York, March 27, 2008.
