Ai Weiwei: Bubble (2008)

In conjunction with Art Basel Miami Beach 2008, Chinese activist and artist Ai Weiwei conceived two projects. One of them was installed on Miami’s Watson Island as part of the Island Gardens development. Entitled Bubble, 2008, the work comprises of one hundred blue porcelain bubbles spread over an area of nearly two thousand feet. Each of the bubbles are about nineteen inches tall. They are installed nine feet apart from one another. It took Ai Weiwei two years to make Bubble. He hopes that the work provokes a dialogue about glamour and wealth in today’s society.
