An Introduction to the Work of Georg Baselitz (7/8)

This is the seventh film in an 8-part series that introduces the work of the German artist Georg Baselitz (in German language with English subtitles). The series was recorded on the occasion of the exhibition “Baselitz” at Fondation Beyeler in Riehen (Basel, Switzerland, 21.1.-29.4.2018).

“Meine neue Mütze” (My New Hat), 2003, and “Frau Ultramarin” (Mrs. Ultramarine), 2004, are sculptural portraits of Georg Baselitz and his wife Elke. Curator Martin Schwander explains, why these sculptures are funny and serious at the same time.

Recorded at Fondation Beyeler, 13 February 2018.

Under the title “Six Decades”, the exhibition is now on view at the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C. (USA) as the first major US retrospective of Baselitz’ oeuvre in more than twenty years (until 16 September 2018). “Six Decades” is curated by Hirshhorn chief curator Stéphane Aquin and the Beyeler curator at large Martin Schwander. The Hirshhorn hosted Baselitz’s first-ever career retrospective in 1996.
