An Introduction to the Work of Georg Baselitz (2/8)

This is the second film in an 8-part series that introduces the work of the German artist Georg Baselitz (in German language with English subtitles). The series was recorded on the occasion of the exhibition “Baselitz” at Fondation Beyeler in Riehen (Basel, Switzerland, 21.1.-29.4.2018).

In the second part of this introduction, Martin Schwander tells the story of the painting “Die grosse Nacht im Eimer” (The Big Night Down the Drain) from 1962-63. When the painting was exhibited in Baselitz’s first solo exhibition at the Galerie Werner & Katz in Berlin it caused a scandal and was confiscated by the state attorney’s office.

Recorded at Fondation Beyeler, 13 February 2018.
