VTV Classics (r3): Christian Jankowski: Kunstmarkt TV (Art Market TV) Recordings (2008)

In the course of our regular work on the archive, the original recordings of our online TV studio at the Art Cologne in 2008 came to our attention. The footage from that time has already been published in its streaming version, but to our surprise not the footage directly from the camera. Time to catch up!

We’ll start with a video whose streaming version we re-edited in 2018 and which differs significantly from the non-streamed version: the recording of Christian Jankowski’s “Kunstmarkt TV” (Art Market TV).

The German artist developed a work for our online TV studio in the Open Space sector of Art Cologne, which brings together live and interactive teleshopping and art. Two professional shopping channel hosts, Khadra Sufi and John Dalke, present and sell artworks by Jeff Koons, Franz West and others. This performance and the recordings of it form the basis for Christian Jankowski’s artwork “Kunstmarkt TV” (Art Market TV).

The work was shown shortly thereafter by Galerie Klosterfelde at Art 39 Basel. If you want to know what it looks like, you can get a picture of it via our coverage at the time or watch the whole film at Jankowski’s website / Vimeo channel.

Of course, this video does not show the artwork, but only the raw footage, which was taken with two cameras. We packed the two camera angles into a split-screen format, the result is an almost three hour long shopping TV experience. This is a 6 min excerpt of it, featuring Jeff Koons’ Inflatable Balloon Flower. Have fun!
