Kunsthalle Darmstadt will show a cross-section of two decades of the Markgräflerland-based artist, with special attention to his painting, which has become more important in recent years. In sculpture, the focus is on recent aluminum casts as well as large works in steel. Schuler’s painting, which alternates between colorful neo-expressionism and monochrome surface art, shows a rapid ductus. Pairs of eyes and limbs invoke figurative ideas that include the human, the fantastic, and the artist himself. Key to understanding are Schuler’s video works, in which the artist exposes himself to extreme situations in an orange jumpsuit, such as when he undresses and redresses in a wind tunnel.
“Experiencing every day as if it were the first. Letting the thoughts jump and fly. Farming the mental farm. Perceiving what is fermenting in the undercurrents and recesses. Create a counterpart that lives on. Being able to be quick and patient. To wait for the fertile moment when you already have to let go. Marco Schuler combines the universal with the hilarious. Buster Keaton meets Leonardo da Vinci.” (Exhibition announcement)
